Biology, epidemiology, and risk analysis in animal health (BioEpAR)

BioEpAR seeks to respond to the social demand and animal health managers expectations by providing key epidemio-economic background information for health management in farm animal populations and for veterinary public health control. MIHMES focuses on scientific issues that are pivotal to the group’s research, the pathogens of interest having been chosen based on the research and knowledge of the epidemiologists in the group.

BioEpAR coordinates the project. It is a mixed unit between INRA and ONIRIS, located in Nantes. It is a multidisciplinary group with special skills in modelling and computing (epidemiological modelling, population dynamics, decision modelling, simulation, model analysis), epidemiology (quantitative and molecular epidemiology, in cattle and pig), animal health management, animal health economics, biostatistics (classical biostatistics, spatial statistics), and immunology. Three teams are involved:

  • MODEC - modelling and decision - aims at better understanding and predicting pathogen spread and persistence in heterogeneous host populations to evaluate the epidemio-economic efficiency of prevention and control strategies. Models of the spread of BVDV, Map and Salmonella carriage in a cattle or pig herd have been developed by team MODEC in collaboration with MIA-Jouy. Research is based on a the development of a multi-scale modelling framework, from the within-host immune response to infection to pathogen spread and control between herds.
  • PVP - populations of vectors and parasites -aims at performing spatial and molecular analyses of pathogen populations to identify the relative contributions of the various routes of transmission in the between-herd spread of pathogens. PVP is particularly interested in Q fever control and the associated spread of Coxiella burnetii at a regional scale.
  • EPID - quantitative epidemiology -aims at describing health statuses of individual cattle and herds, identifying main factors of disease occurrence in cattle herds, and evaluating disease impact and efficiency of control measures at the herd or regional scale.
